Sandra first accessed support in 2022. Since then, she’s benefited from money support advice, careers guidance, CV support, training including completion of Clean Slate’s 7 Signs employability course, interview skills training and participation in a mock interview with one of our contractors, Murray Birrell. Sandra is now working part-time and will be starting mentoring.

I don’t remember my first conversation with my advisor very well. What I remember is the times. I doubt anyone will not have strong and vivid recollections associated with Coronavirus and Lockdowns. In 2020, I was a busy single mum managing care of my two children aged 16 and 7. Both of them have additional needs.

My life was challenging prior, but suddenly reached ” level extreme”, as the safety net around my children crumbled. Changes to their routine proved difficult to cope with for a young person with limited understanding of the situation.

Of course, my experience wasn’t unique or worse than others in similar situations. In a way carers often experience isolation and are trained for lockdowns. I realised then that there may never be a perfect moment to focus on my own goals again. It triggered me to break free and start to focus on me.

It became my mission to learn new skills I completed: a sewing course, a Mental Health course and attended art therapy webinars (something I really wanted to explore for a long time prior).

I’d received Hexagon’s Home News magazine since becoming a resident in 2013 and was aware of ways to engage with support but my caring duties made it difficult for me to get involved. When I reflect on it now, over the time I lost a lot of confidence.

One day, when I received an email about employment support I responded. I realised that I want to go back into paid employment and needed help in finding my path to do so.

The model that Hexagon uses for employment projects is second  to none. I felt it was focused on me and very individually designed. I immediately was added to the mailing list for job adverts from Hexagon and partners.

Another important factor was regular catch ups on the phone with my advisor. I initially felt that I fell off the job market. I couldn’t see my strengths. My advisor was patient and precise in pointing to my previous experience and skills. She would help me with practical elements of the process e.g. benefit calculations and help with travel. Our catch ups allowed me to stay focused on my goals. I felt listened to. The process wasn’t rushed and focused on me finding long term and fulfilling employment.

With every job application, every course I attended organised by Hexagon or partners my confidence grew. It really allowed me to see myself as an asset to the employer and changed my outlook on the job market.

I felt a sense of community the support Hexagon provides helps connect people. We are cheerleaders to each other’s progress.

I found employment with the charity Clean Slate as a Peer Support worker for a few hours a week and completed a Peer Support course. It is a good work/life balance for the moment, but it’s just the start for me.
